MESMA Final Conference

The three day conference will explore three key elements of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) comprising spatial data and models, monitoring and evaluation, and governance of MSP. Illustrated by renowned key note speakers, the conference will provide a platform to discuss underpinning science, practical tools and emerging issues in MSP.

Over the period 2009 – 2013, the EU funded MESMA project has developed integrated management tools (concepts, models and guidelines) for Monitoring, Evaluation and implementation of Spatially Managed marine Areas. MESMA has produced innovative methods and integrated strategies for governments, local authorities, stakeholders, and other managerial bodies for planning and decision making at different local, national, and European scales, for sustainable development of European seas.

MESMA scientists look forward to share their findings and experiences, and discuss the policy, practice and science of marine spatial planning. Therefore, we would like to invite all interested parties to the MESMA conference, which will be held in Lisbon on the 8th, 9th and 10th of October 2013.

The conference will run for three days:

  • Day 1 will be devoted to the policy landscape and state of play in the practical implementation of MSP.
  • Day 2 will be dedicated to presenting the project’s outcome and introducing the developed practical tools that are now publicly available for analysing the MSP process.
  • Day 3 will be devoted to the science behind evaluating and monitoring marine areas. Three parallel sessions will be held to showcase applications and findings. Scientists from both the MESMA project and the wider scientific community are encouraged to use this day to present and discuss their findings and challenges.

Key note speakers:
