One of the most important tasks of the NRL for Plant Health is to maintain the highest level of scientific expertise and technical competence. This is made possible by conducting research. We gather knowledge about the biology and epidemiology of specific quarantine organisms (e.g. Phytophthora ramorum, Meloidogyne chitwoodi, Ralstonia solanacearum, etc.). We also work to develop and improve the diagnostic methods used to detect and identify these organisms. All diagnostic services are performed under the strict rules of our quality assurance system.
The main "customers" of the NRL are the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC), the FASFC laboratories and the other approved diagnostic laboratories. The NRL's main tasks are to supply technical and scientific advice; to organise inter-laboratory studies; and to coordinate scientific and technical training.
