Digestate as a starting product for soil improvers and organic fertilizers

HOW TO TRANSFORM DIGESTATE INTO AN INTERESTING PRODUCT?

DigestateRaw digestate, a product of anaerobic digestion, contains many nutrients and organic matter. However, marketing is difficult due to competition with manure and artificial fertiliser, in combination with the provisions of the Flemish Fertilizer Action Plan. By separating, drying, mixing with other high-grade organic waste streams, pelleting, etc., products are made that can be marketed more widely as soil improvers or organic fertilisers. These products can be supplied to agriculture, private customers and other professional customers such as garden contractors, inter-municipal utility companies, etc. The products can also be used by the agricultural sector.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NEW COMPOSITE PRODUCTS?

Candidates for new products are submitted to ILVO for characterisation as part of the DIMA project:

  • Determination of the N coefficient of action by means of incubation tests (116 days)
  • Stability of organic matter based on incubation tests and chemical analysis
  • Estimation of the P2O5 and/or K2O availability

BASIS FOR ADJUSTING COMPOSITIONS

The scientific characterisation indicates the extent to which the various products can be used as qualitative soil improvers or organic fertilisers. On the basis of this information, processing processes can be adjusted and optimised. In case of marketing, the chemical composition and the operating coefficients can be communicated to the customer. The characterisation indicates whether the product should be used as a soil improver or as an organic fertiliser.
