Valorisation of biomass flows in animal feed

HOW IS THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF BY-PRODUCTS FROM THE FOOD INDUSTRY AND BIOENERGY PRODUCTION DETERMINED FOR VARIOUS ANIMAL SPECIES?

...

LABORATORY ANALYSES AND ANIMAL TESTING

  • Chemical analysis and in vitro digestibility of representative batches to estimate potential feed value and variation in quality.
  • Experiments with ruminants, pigs and/or poultry to determine the digestibility of nutrients (protein, fat, fibre, starch, minerals, amino acids, ...) and the energy and protein value.
  • Feed tests on animals to assess the effects on intake, production (milk, meat, eggs, etc.), product quality and animal health and to determine the optimal level of incorporation into the ration/feed.

EXAMPLES OF CO-PRODUCTS

  • Food industry: beer draff, sugar beet pulp, molasses, chicory pulp, milk and cheese whey, corn gluten feed, soybean meal, linseed, potato by-products, bread and biscuit meal, ...
  • Bioenergy production: rapeseed by-products, glycerol, DDGS, wheat yeast concentrate
