During our research, ILVO takes samples of invertebrates (sea stars, crabs, jellyfish, and shrimp) as well as fish (including sole, plaice, and whiting). The sampling happens on research vessels as well as commercial boats. In the wake of this work, marine organisms can be taken back to land either alive or preserved (in formol, ethanol, cooled or frozen) for the purpose of expositions, practical work in university colleges and universities, or for other purposes. The timing and the quantity of animals delivered depends on how the work is organised and the weather conditions. ILVO lands the animals in the state requested (i.e. live or preserved) in Ostend or Zeebrugge. The customer is then responsible for further transport.
