Certified National Reference Labs (NRL)

Exceeding legal standards can have a large impact on a producer and product distribution, and can even lead to product recall and subsequent product destruction. Such actions damage the image of the producer, which goes hand in hand with economic loss. The reference working should therefore enable the stakeholder himself to deliver correct analysis results for appeal or for access to correct analysis results. Moreover, reference working makes correct and independent assessments of threats to public health.

NRL for Plant Health

The National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Plant Diseases is a centre of expertise on the diagnosis and biology of quarantine diseases and pests. The NRL supports the plant health policy in Belgium and the European Union and gives advice to the agencies involved. The plant health policies serve to safeguard plant production and the natural environment from very harmful plant diseases or new disease threats. The state of quarantine organisms is closely followed and studied via participation in a range of European networks and projects. ILVO is responsible for the NRL activities on bacteria, phytoplasms, fungi, nematodes and insects.
