Diagnostic Centre for Plants

The Diagnostic Centre for Plants (DCP) detects and identifies organisms harmful to plants. The DCP has expertise with bacteria, fungi, viruses, nematodes, insects and mites.

Ploidy analysis

Flow cytometry is used for the analysis of ploidy level and genome size at ILVO. These measurements are mainly used to determine the ploidy level after propagation in seed propagated crops, after mitotic polyploidisation, for the characterisation of parent plants and offspring plants of interploidy crosses in a breeding programme, etc.

Molecular markers

In the course of performing assignments for the Government of Flanders, UPOV, ISF and CIOPORA, ILVO has developed expertise in genetic identification of plants and plant varieties using molecular markers. These techniques can be used to determine whether a variety is true-to-type, its parentage, the genetic purity and its homogeneity. The analysis can be performed on any sample of plant material. During each analysis, one must account for the nature of the crop (self-pollinating or cross-pollinating) and the various variety concepts in breeding.
