Bruising or mechanical damaging of potatoes can lead to substantial quality losses. In many cases these losses result from damaged or badly adjusted machinery. Impacts occur often, especially during harvest. The extent of the damage is not visible until after harvesting or, in some cases, until the potatoes reach the consumer. For that reason, the screening of the potato handling line (including potato harvesters, storing lines, washing and sorting lines) by means of an electronic “potato” can help to prevent these losses in the future. Critical areas of the harvest or processing line characterised by high impact risk are indicated and machinery or equipment is adjusted accordingly. The farmer or contract worker receives a report with extra information about the test and a list of attention points.
