Agricultural Crops

agricultural cropsCrop research includes the effect of low-input cultivation (reduced use of crop protection products, less nutrient input). Cultivation techniques, breeding, genetic and eco-physiological research are mainly studied in these crops: grasses, clover, silage and corn maize, potatoes, chicory, green manure and now energy crops as well.

Ornamental Plants

XanthippeILVO supports ornamental plant cultivation in Flanders through breeding and crop protection. In collaboration with the ornamental industry sector, ILVO generates new cultivars of azalea, ornamental trees and roses that are then marketed by our partners. The ILVO research and the Diagnostic Centre for Plants provide help with sustainable solutions and the diagnosis of diseases and plagues.

Horticulture

horticultureHorticultural research at ILVO focuses mainly on crop protection and breeding. Which bacteria, fungi, viruses, nematodes, quarantaine organism, insects and mites put crops at risk and how does one control these problems? The horticultural breeding programme focuses mainly on leek and celeriac.

Energy Crops

energy cropsThe cultivation of energy crops produces a large amount of biomass. This is a possible source for the production of renewable energy. ILVO researches the cultivation of energy crops for combustion, biogas applications and second generation biofuels. Specific crops are: energy maize, perennial grassland, Miscanthus, ribbon grass, crabgrass, and others.
